Health and Well-Being

Ny Fahasalamana sy ny fahadiovana

Health care and education go hand in hand. In primary schools, emphasis will be placed on hygiene and prevention.

History

In the Malagasy official language, the word used for “medicine” (fanafody), originates from fanafak’ody, which literally means remover of charms or fetish. After the introduction of Christianity, along with the public education, some time around 1870, the traditional ways to deal with health issues was slowly changed; thanks to science, the imperative of rationalization came to power. Although, traditional remedy was not totally abandoned. Since the advent of the first medical school in 1880, Madagascar people are still lingering between Western and traditional medicine, up to this day.
